JSE Holiday Newsletter

December 29, 2008 by johnspencerellis

From the desk of Dr. John Spencer Ellis

I hope this letter finds you well.  This time of year can be challenging at times.  Because of this, I want to share a simple “helpful holiday tool” with you.  It’s something you already know (and forget to do all the time).  In the words of my yoga teacher, Erich Schiffmann, “Pause and breathe.  Be in the now.”

Frequently, we get caught up in self-imposed obligations, multiple family rituals and a culture asking more than we can (and want) to deliver.  So, you can pause and breathe while taking your attention into the current moment whenever needed.  It’s simple and it works to regain the “peace” we often speak about during the holidays.

In short, do what is right for YOU and not what is deemed to be right by others.  Respect yourself and your limits during a season which asks so much.

On another note, I wanted to take a moment to invite you and your friends to the World Premiere of The Compass movie in Orange County, CA on February 8, 2009.  It will be the party of the year. You and a friend will be treated to a red carpet event, reception party, charity auction, live bands, celebrity appearances, slide show and first ever screening of The Compass.  VIP tickets are going fast and space is limited.  Visit http://www.thecompass.tv right now and reserve your tickets.  Remember, the auction benefits three charities.

And, lastly, time is running out to take advantage of the massive sale at the Spencer Institute for Life Coaching.  Begin a new career or enhance your existing career in the coaching and wellness fields.

I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season.  Be certain that 2009 will be full of opportunity and personal growth!

Be well,

John

Business Tip: Form your own Personal Success Network
From Dr. John Spencer Ellis, CEO

If you are not yet as successful as you want to be, then you simply must network to become acquainted with others who can help you.  Networking means going to company and other non-company functions and parties and extending yourself to meet others.  Many people feel that small talk and getting to know people is only a natural ability that some people have and others do not.  Becoming good at talking to people and getting to know others is an acquired skill.

You might read that there are specific rules about what can and cannot be said when starting a conversation with a business contact or client.  This could not be further from the truth.  You must start a conversation, keep the conversation going, and create a bond so that the other person thinks you are a cool person worth getting to know and talking to.  The concept that you should not be talking about your personal life or controversial topics is overstated.  The most important thing for you to do is to be yourself.  Don’t worry about what to say or not say when starting a conversation; simply know that you must start it.  Power comes from sharing information, not keeping it from others.  Being up front, honest, and sincere with others earns well-deserved respect.

You have only a few seconds before a person decides whether they like you or not.  Most of this communication is nonverbal.  Smile, make eye contact, lean in without invading the other person’s personal space, and relax.  Make the other person feel like the most important person in the room.  Adapt to the other person by dialing down your excitement and focusing on being more deliberate and precise with your words, and listening to what the person has to say.  Using a similar style of speech, body language, tone, and cadence is not something you practice or try to do, but something that will come naturally if you relax and are attentive to the person with whom you are communicating.

When concluding your conversation in a group setting, mention something significant from your conversation and then simply state what a pleasure it was speaking with him or her and that you are looking forward to speaking again.  If you wish to continue the relationship, after mentioning something significant you both had in common from your conversation, mention that “we should get together sometime and talk about (blank).”  This isn’t meant to be a format for dating, but there are some strong similarities aren’t there?  If the person is interested in furthering your friendship or business relationship, they will agree that you should meet again and this is the opportunity to exchange business cards, emails, or cell numbers.  If not, they won’t.  You will then move on to talk with someone else.

Networking with other professionals so that you can share in your professional expertise and learn from one another is crucial in your development as a person and as a professional.  Don’t TRY to get something out of the relationship, if you are willing to listen to the other person, and show genuine appreciation for the other person’s time, and share something of worth, you will both benefit from the contact.

For more information on how to network and communicate with other professionals, consider Spencer Institute’s coaching programs at http://www.spencerinstitute.com/ourprograms.html.  You should also refer to your NESTA PFT manual.  Don’t have an updated manual?  Order or upgrade at www.nestapft.com or by calling 1-877-348-6692.  Specials are available now.  Listen and observe carefully, or you’ll miss the big opportunity you have been looking for.

Only at NESTA PFT Workshops will you:

  1. Take your PFT exam live, without traveling to a testing center location, and get your exam results faster than anywhere else
  2. Gain more hands-on biomechanical breakdowns of bodyweight, machine, cable, medicine ball, stability ball, and free weight exercises than through any other certification program
  3. Get detailed descriptions of how to actually meet, obtain, and keep training clients
  4. Learn from instructors who currently work as trainers (not just in office or academia settings) with a minimum of five years experience as a certified personal trainer, two or more years of teaching experience, and a bachelor’s or advanced college degree
